              • has been in the field for a minimum of 5 years;
              • is someone who has made a significant contribution at a municipal, regional, provincial or national level;

              • someone who has provided optimal recreation and leisure opportunity to their community.

The Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals strives to support recreation professionals who continue to make a difference within their communities and ensure that they are given proper recognition for the countless hours they put into providing a place to live healthy, active lifestyles and towards the wellbeing of all citizens.

S.A.R.P. is honoured to present the Award of Merit to one of our long time Professional members who has contributed so much - Mr. Mike Schwean!

Nominated by the Town of Moosomin Recreation Committee, the outline of Mike's contributions date back to 1988 in the field of recreation (1990 in this community) and these contributions are simply outstanding!  Mike is truly a perfect recipient for this award as it is very evident to see his community pride, his parternships and his ability to work with community members to achieve great success.

Shelley Thoen-Chaykoski, S.A.R.P. Board of Directors Vice Chairperson, presented Mike with his award on January 4, 2017 in Moosomin and had this to say:

"I have known Mike for many years and during my time working in my community, I relied heavily on Mike and his expert advice especially in the area of facility management and operations.  Mike has ALWAYS been more than willing to help his fellow professionals as well as neighbouring communities to be the best they can be and operate the best they can - I thank you for that Mike.  COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES IS THE RENT WE PAY FOR OUR TIME HERE ON THIS EARTH....well, might I suggest that Mike Schwean is NOT behind in this rent called community service, but literally lives and breathes COMMUNITY SERVICE and his fingerprints are on much of the success of your community.  You should all be very, very proud of Mike and his contributions.  And finally Mike, stand proud, you deserve this Award of Merit and MORE!!  One more thing, as a colleague of Mike's, I know the time away from home and family that is required for this work, so a big thanks to Mike's family for sharing him with the community!"

Thank you for your continued contributions to the field of recreation and leisure and for paving the way for future recreation professionals within the province!

Kudos Korner

Donna has worked at the Battelford's District Care Centre for 32 years.  Thirteen of those years have been in the Recreation department working as an Assisted Daily Recreation worker and over the past 8 years, as a Recreation Therapist.

Her passion has always been to help people and when she first began to work as a Recreation Assistant, she knew she had found her dream job!  And then the adventure began with many challenges...

Donna continued working full time and caring for her 3 children alongside her husband while enrolling in the Long-Distance Education Program for Therapeutic Recreation at SIAST in Saskatoon.  The real challenge began just a little over midway through the program when her 14 year old son was diagnosed with Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a rare subtype Philadelphia Positive.  The only chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant.  At the time of diagnoses Donna had 4 courses in progress and had just enrolled in 2 new courses.  With a heavy heart, she was ready to throw in the towel, but her ill son pleaded with her to continue...not to give up.  Linda Martin, one of Donna's Therapeutic Recreation instructors, also encouraged and supported the idea that she should continue.

In 2009, Donna's hard work paid off and she completed her education, walking proudly across the stage to receive her Diploma with her family in the audience, most importantly, her son was there as well!

Battleford's District Care Centre is a 117-bed facility with a variety of clients.  There is long term level 3 & 4 beds, an Alzheimer's Unit, an Acquired Brain Injury unit, and Rehab/Respite beds available.  Donna's Recreation team consists of 2 Therapists and 2 full-time Assisted Daily Living Recreation workers.

Donna and her team work very hard to enhance their clients' lives through a variety of programs. Some of the onsite programs include:  weekly homemade bread, exercises, monthly random acts of kindness, couple's outings/socials, dances with DJ music, weekly music, physical/memory games, baking, monthly bacon & egg breakfasts, variety of crafts, gardening, massage & manicures, pet visits, cultural programs, and spiritual programs.  Many community outings are also offered and enjoyed, such as:  monthly shopping trips, farm visits, lake picnics, a variety of coffee outings, winter/summer fishing trips, zoo trips, community events and wheelchair ice skating.

Donna has also taken on the opportunity to mentor 4 Therapeutic Recreation Practicum students. This highlights her passion to provide guidance to those who also see the value in this very meaningful career.  Donna has said "The best part of my day is knowing that I hvae made a difference in another person's life and helped to make it a little better!"

Thank you Donna for being such a positive influence in people's lives through the skills you continue to offer as a Recreation Therapist.  You have truly made a difference in many lives by delivering programs and services that enhance quality of life.  On behalf of the Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals, Kudos to you and your team!
